Solvane

Solvane makes straps and bags for working photographers. Their catalogue had always been shot as cutouts on white, and the brief asked for the opposite: the gear in hands, outdoors, under an open sky.

On location

We shot over two bright days, keeping the horizon low so the sky did the work of a backdrop. Every strap was photographed on a camera, in a hand, in the middle of being used. The hands belonged to working photographers Solvane already knew, so the grip on each body looks right to anyone who carries one.

The studio half

The catalogue still needed clean product frames. We ran those on seamless paper in the studio the following week, lit to match the colour of the outdoor set so the two sit together on the same page.

The licence covers Solvane's website, retail partners and print catalogue for two years, written into the estimate before the first day.
